CHOOSING A SPECIALIST

Specialists are needed to treat very specific medical issues. The search for a specialist normally is driven by the discovery of an issue, and almost always involves the patient's primary care physician. Naturally, a patient should expect a specialist to be an expert in the type of disorder that needs to be treated. As in other fields, the experience and qualification of the specialist are among the most critical factors. In medicine experience and qualification are factors that can be compared between the physicians being considered. Because this information is so important, any patient should feel free to ask the physicians they are considering about their experience and qualifications.

A patient may want to ask about a physician's educational background and other medical training. Patients may also want to know about the physicians experience in general, and about experience related to the patient's particular ailment. This might include questions like:

• How many procedures of a particular type has the physician done?
• What are some of the problems that the physician might have encountered?
• What training has the physician had in dealing with the patient's particular issue?

All competent physicians are glad to supply this information. In fact many make it readily available. Whether the issue involves a matter of minor physical inconvenience or a life threatening illness the patient should always seek a specialist with substantial qualification and experience.
