New Cystoscopy Suite

A new Cystocopy Suite was installed at the Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center in Davenport in March 2010.

State of the art technology used for the Suite includes digital and fluoroscopic imaging and a high definition camera and monitor for telescopic procedures.  This latest technology will enhance all urinary stone procedures, and any endoscopic procedures such as TURP, Greenlight photo vaporization of the prostate, and transurethral resection of bladder tumors.

Robotic vs. Open Prostatectomies

Dr. Herbert Lepor, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology at the NYU School of Medicine, outlined in a review article (Reviews in Urology, 2009) that there is a lack of evidence-based medicine to support the claims made by proponents of Robotic Prostatectomy.  He stated that there are high costs involved with the robotic technology and substantial training needed to operate it.  He mentioned that marketing by industry, not medical evidence, has apparently influenced urologists and patients toward the robotic approach.

Case of Penile Calciphylaxis

Penile calciphylaxis is a rare necrotic lesion first involving the glans of the penis in chronic renal failure patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism.  (See Dr. Jhaveri’s publication:  Journal of Urology 1998; 160:  764-767)

Dr. Jhaveri recently took care of a new case of penile calciphylaxis, where the patient required a partial penectomy and then a parathyroidectomy.
